The gap between a comp and a live site isn't a failure — it's the natural result of translating a static idea into an interactive, adaptive, multi-environment reality. Here are the most common reasons a production site will differ from the original design file.
Every browser has its own rendering engine. Chrome uses Blink, Safari uses WebKit, and Firefox uses Gecko. They each make slightly different decisions about font smoothing, sub-pixel rendering, spacing, and line height. The same CSS produces subtly different results in each browser — and none of them are "wrong."
A drop shadow that looks soft in Chrome may appear slightly sharper in Firefox. Anti-aliased text that looks crisp on a Mac may appear heavier on Windows. These are inherent platform behaviors, not defects in the code.
Custom fonts load after the page structure appears. Until they load, the browser shows a fallback font (or nothing). If the change affects how users perceive performance vs. safety, compliance must approve. What seemed like moving blocks around cascades into a multi-hour project.
No quick changes in regulated environments. Every change touches design, code, testing, compliance, and operations. In enterprise environments, a change that seems trivial to a stakeholder might require hours of work from designers, developers, QA engineers, and legal reviewers. What takes 5 minutes in Figma takes 2–8 hours in production. Understanding this difference is crucial for realistic timelines and expectations.

Developers aim for visual fidelity — a site that feels like the design — not an impossible pixel-for-pixel clone across every environment.
Your laptop is one environment among thousands. Different browsers, operating systems, screen sizes, zoom levels, font settings, and browser extensions all affect how a site appears. What looks perfect in Chrome on your MacBook may look different in Safari on an iPad or Firefox on a Windows PC. This is why QA tests across a defined set of supported environments — and why "it works for me" is useful information, but not a complete picture.
